New Image College hosted an amazing and inspirational NIC Talk with Emmy Award Winner and founder of IMATS, Michael Key! In addition, IMATS’ online editor, Annika and Director of Pro Artists Relations, Kayla, joined Michael for this incredible NIC seminar.
Kayla started by explaining how their Pro Card works and the benefits of joining the community. Their cards offer discounts for tickets at IMATS, admission to pro-only events that are hosted year-round, and discounts to subscriptions with Make-Up Artist Magazine.
New Image College students and alumni are eligible to apply and receive their cards by mail. Please visit the following link to get started: https://www.makeupmag.com/pro.
Michael Key took the stage and gave an insightful talk. He stressed the importance of being prepared and taking advantage of all opportunities. Michael guided our students through meaningful anecdotes, giving practical examples of how our students can capitalize on possibilities when they immerse themselves in the industry. For example, he talked about the relevance of artists having business cards on hands with a picture of themselves and their work.
The focus then shifted to Annika, as she dissected all things IMATS’ “Battle of the Brushes”. She offered step by step advice on how to apply, this years’ themes, how to manage your timing and much more. Michael offered insight into how the selection and judging process works and gave invaluable tips to all students regarding their portfolio submissions. We wrapped up the motivating talk with a student-led Q&A.
After the talk, students were invited to meet Michael, Annika, and Kayla personally. Make sure to check out the great group photo!
Kiana Larson, our talented graduate, and winner of last year’s Prosthetic/Character Creation category and selected for this year’s New York’s, was invited to speak after Michael and offer her personal experience. Kiana answered questions and talk about the necessity to prepare, to be creative, and to be resourceful. She emphasized the importance of our participants doing their research, and having a complete understanding of their character’s world formulated before putting all the skills to practice!

We are very excited about the 2018 Vancouver competition in October, and are thrilled to assist and sponsor our students again have they take on these year’s IMATS “Battle of the Brushes”! We’re looking forward to seeing who joins the list of NIC’s IMATS winners!
