Project Synopsis

LOGLINE
A young father falls into a parallel world where a few seconds is the difference between a normal life and a nightmare.

STORYLINE
There are two stories here: one in which Rhett hugs his wife goodbye and one in which he doesn’t. The difference of those few seconds of affection is the exact amount of time that separates these parallel worlds and despite the minor discrepancy, the result is a nightmare for the latter man….

…. Rhett’s son has died in a car accident, his nephew is in a coma, and now a tree falls onto the road. In one parallel world, it falls behind Rhett, in the other, it blocks his path. The two worlds converge at this exact moment and the chaos of two Rhett’s interacting with his wife Claire and extended family are almost too much for the family to bear.

Additional Comments:

Project Length: Short Film (~13 min)
Project Format: RED Epic, 2.35 HD

Character 1
RHETT
Age

20-40’s…

Gender

Male

Description

Lead. A “Type A” chatter-mouth who believed in fate and miracles until they ruined his life. He’s still in love with his wife Claire, but his passion has been consumed by apathy and cynicism after his son perished in a car accident. Despite this weight, he still maintains a sharp talking edge and speaks his mind. *Please see the note

Character 2
UNCLE MANN
Age

40-60’s…

Gender

Male

Description

Lead. Boastful and belligerent. A retired pipeline welder with wealth where his brains used to be. What once was a quick wit and youthful charm has devolved into a bad pun only an uncle can make. His son is in a coma but that won’t stop him from enjoying life. *We only see Mann in the “bad fate” world where his son is in a coma.

Character 3
CLAIRE
Age

20-40’s…

Gender

Female

Description

Lead. 20-40’s. Lead. Very comfortable with who she is and motherhood only reinforced that confidence. A perfectionist who’s learned to make compromises, she is the opposite of Rhett but in a good way. She speaks cautiously and in the interest of others before herself. *We only see Claire in the “good fate” world where her son is alive.

Character 4
AUNT MARIE-ANN
Age

40-60’s…

Gender

Female

Description

Supporting. A once bright spirit, it now flickers with anxiety. Maintaining her husband’s (Uncle Mann) behaviour is a full-time job and after her son fell into a coma she’s never recovered. Still sweet but the weight of grief is showing more and more. *Please see the note

Character 5
DOROTHY:
Age

50-70’s…

Gender

Female

Description

Supporting. Freely embraces whatever life throws at her and shoulders even the strangest hardships with ease. Faith is her strength and she’s not afraid to show it.

Additional Characters

NEIL:
Supporting. 10-19. Small and thin for his age, and currently in a coma. Performance is primarily unconscious but is important nonetheless.

PARTY GOERS:
Supporting. The extended family of Uncle Mann, Aunt Marie-Ann, and Rhett. They’re dressed to impress and having a quaint time.

(*RHETT AND MARIE-ANN NOTES)
Please read the storyline to appreciate the dual character performances. Only these two characters are seen in both worlds, therefore it is paramount the actors demonstrate a capability to play two personas: one in which their son’s are alive and well, and one in which fate has been extremely hard on them.
