Amber Downing:
Program Director, Senior Academic Officer

Amber Downing started her career as an esthetician and makeup artist in Vancouver 1998 after moving from her small town of Williams Lake, deep in the interior of B.C. Throughout her seventeen year career, Amber has had the privilege to work in many distinguished spas throughout Vancouver and Europe.

Amber began her career professionally at Spa of the Century located on Burrard Street. During her time at the luxurious spa she had the pleasure to work on many distinguished guests like Dianna Krall, Pam Grier, Calista Flockhart, Bridget Fonda, Gillian Anderson and Sharon Stone. “It is important to provide the same quality of services on all your clients regardless of who they are. The client deserves 100% of your energy whether they’re your first or last client of the day”. Before leaving Vancouver, Amber was managing Premier Salon at the Bay and Eatons; which was a full service spa and hair salon.

Shortly after, Amber moved to London England to continue her practical training. Once she arrived, she immediately struck a position as the director of Serenity Beauty Rooms. “As beauty artists we should always be perfecting our techniques. We are here to make people feel good, but in order to make someone else feel good you must first allow yourself to do the same”.

While in England, Amber traveled to Windsor and began doing freelance makeup until she was requested to manage at the Lemon Tree Spa, which was located just blocks from Eton College; school for the Royal Princes, William and Harry. For the next several years Amber would travel throughout Germany, Spain, India, France and Scotland to explore different spas, products and treatments.

Amber would return to Vancouver and begin working for the renown day spa “Beverly’s the Spa on 4”, “It was at Beverly’s where I really learned the importance of retail strategy”. In 2005 Amber would begin her journey with New Image College becoming the Senior Academic Officer for the Spa and Beauty Departments. “We want students that have a genuine passion for taking care of others. That take pride in the maintenance, quality and condition of the human body”. While working for New Image College she was cast to play a body double for a movie of the week which entailed performing in a waxing and manicure scene. Amber has also worked on numerous commercial sets; most notable, a Subway commercial where she was employed to do a manicured hand. Amber has also had the privilege to write articles for newspapers, magazines and appear as a guest speaker on several radio interview shows that promote the techniques learned in the spa department at the college.

“I have a true thirst for the knowledge. Knowledge that I find is best conveyed through theoretical studies. We prepare you for every situation and client type. We want you to be able to take these skills and use them anywhere in the world”.

New Image College’s spa and beauty departments boasts students that work in some of the most luxurious spas in exotic places like Malta, which sits on the south of Sicily, Spain, Mexico, Ireland and Asia.

“My students work before graduation because they are energized and confident before they leave our college and they are equipped with the tools they need to succeed”.

Esthetics is a unique and talent orientated profession which involves caring for the health and safety of your clients while delivering a positive, professional service.

Meaghan believes that organization is a strong quality while running a business and is a personal quality of mine that I practice consistently throughout the workplace as well as punctuality, being prepared and demonstrating a positive attitude.

With the experience and confidence earned in the last three years I have the ability to offer outstanding services and create long term clients. With these skills and dedication to my professional career I have become motivated to educate and share the world of esthetics. I have learned that educating is a skill that requires good communication, confidence and the ability to meet individual needs.

As an esthetician I educate clients how to properly take care of their beauty needs by sharing information of the anatomy and physiology of the body. The opportunity to teach students in a classroom is a responsibility. A responsibility to the art of esthetics, the college and the future of all students that come though. I hope to share my story of success and happiness motivating others to believe in themselves beginning their start of a wonderful career.
