Star Wars mania has taken the world by storm(troopers)! But did you know  the giant aliens weren’t all CG? They were really incredible prosthetics on famous faces!

Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End) dawned a giant alien prosthetic torso and head to play the scrap collector in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The team involved with creating the alien prosthetics, Pinewood Studios, had legendary Academy Award Winner, prosthetics designer and animatronics guru Neal Scanlan design an array of aliens from head to toe, including the creature for Simon Pegg’s character.

Using cutting edge technology like 3D-Printing and micro controllers to move the face, Scanlan designed the aliens with makeup techniques to reveal true to life characteristics of what an alien’s brutal life on a desert planet might go through.

The same techniques and prosthetics principles are taught to New Image College students in the graduate program, Cutting Edge Advanced Prosthetics. Students learn an array of techniques including working with maquettes, appendage scaffolding and creature creation.
